Things to do in Jackson, NH

  • 27th Annual Wildman Biathlon

    08/08/2015

    Presented by: Wildcat Mountain
    Location: Wildcat Mountain
    Date: Saturday, August 8, 2015
    Time: 10:00am

It's time for the 27th annual Wildman Biathlon, scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 8:00 a.m., rain or shine. So here is the call for all runners and bicyclists to shift their training schedules into high gear and register for this amazing event!

The Wildman Biathlon is a three-part (duathlon) event for teams and individuals. Athletes from all over the United States, Canada and some years even other countries, come to New Hampshire’s White Mountains to compete as an individual or as teams in the Wildman. For decades athletes have been challenging their endurance amid some of the most spectacular scenery in the Northeast. The Wildman Biathlon consists of a 10-K run in the picturesque town of Shelburne, a 22.3 mile bicycle trek through Gorham towards a 3-mile hill climb up the Polecat ski trail to the finish line at the summit of Wildcat Mountain, a presenting sponsor, located in Pinkham Notch.

T-shirts are offered to all participants with trophies awarded to overall and category winners along with numerous prizes given away through random drawing.

Each Registrant will also receive 1 meal ticket good for an "après race" pasta meal at Wildcat. Additional meal tickets may be purchased for $7.00. There are a few picnic tables available at the finish. An observation deck is located at the summit of Wildcat Mountain "D." Complete details will be sent with your confirmation packet. Helmets are required of all bicyclists competing.

  • White Mountain Art & Artisan Festival

    08/15/2015

    Location: Jackson Village Park
    Date: Saturday, August 15, 2015

This is a Juried Two Day event... Sat August 15th 10 AM - 5 PM and Sun August 16th 10 AM - 4 PM. Artists and artisans wishing to participate in this event should click on the application, print it and send it in with your check. The application can be found by clicking the link at the bottom of this page marked White Mountain Art Application 2nd page.

Our White Mountain Art & Artisan Festival is one of the Northeast's premier events for artists and artisans, the 2015 juried exposition should feature works by more than 40 artists presenting sculpture, glass and wood arts, ceramics, fiber arts, fine arts and jewelry for sale at all price points.

There will be live musical performances starting on Saturday and continuing on Sunday with local musicians. We'll be sure to have local and visiting food vendors.

Join in on the arts and crafts activities for children, that could include sand sculpting, beading, temporary tattoos and t-shirt decorating.

Remember it was through the eyes of the artists of the White Mountain School of Art that the world first became aware of the beauty of Jackson. Many of the artists of the 19th century White Mountain School came to Jackson to view the lovely scenes we live with every day from pastoral farms to the grandeur of Mt. Washington. In 1923, Wallace Nutting, author of "New Hampshire Beautiful" put it well when he said "People of Jackson can claim as their advantage to be in the immediate view of the best of the White Mountains. Jackson undoubtedly stands high among the more desirable mountain towns as a goal of visitation."
This holds true today. Works of art from local and visiting artists who convey their vision of this spectacular area on canvas continue to be popular purchases.

This event can be enjoyed by singles, couples and the entire family... with something special for each.

Walter Cronkite is Dead, a comedy

    January 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30

M&D Playhouse presents the comedy Walter Cronkite is Dead, January 14 – 30, at Your Theatre in Willow Common, 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway.

THE STORY: A fierce thunderstorm has shut down airports up and down the East Coast. Two women, who appear to have nothing in common, are stuck in a waiting area at Reagan National Airport. Patty (Karen Gustafson) is a chatty southerner—a blue-collar woman from a red state—who is almost physically unable to tolerate silence. Margaret (Christine Thompson) is a Washingtonian, reserved, educated, liberal and not interested in sharing her thoughts, or her table, with Patty. Forced together for a long night in a public place, the two strangers have no choice but to share a bottle of wine and begin to talk…and to listen. Their conversation is funny, difficult, deeply revealing and astonishingly frank. Patty and Margaret share details of their lives that lead them to a place of kinship neither of them could have imagined. Yes, Walter Cronkite is dead, but his wisdom and compassion lives on in this insightful comedy about what might be possible if people from opposite sides of the political aisle would stop shouting and take even one night to listen.

Performances are scheduled January 14 through 30, Thursday through Saturday, at 7:30 p.m., at 1857 White Mountain Highway, North Conway.

  • Groundhog Day

    02/02/2016

Groundhog Day is celebrated in the U.S. each year on February 2and. On this day in mid-winter, the groundhog awakens from a long winter's nap, and goes outside of his den to see if he sees his shadow. This tradition is big, on an otherwise cold and dreary mid-winter's day.

According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow (a sunny morning), there will be six more weeks of winter. He then returns to his den and goes back to sleep. If however, he does not see his shadow (cloudy days), he plays around outside of his hole for a while. If he does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner.

The Groundhog's Day tradition travelled long ways. It comes from German roots. German immigrants brought the tradition with them from Germany. As they settled in hills of Pennsylvania, they began the tradition of using the Groundhog to predict the the arrival of Spring. The tradition is based upon Candlemas, the day that is the midpoint between Winter and Spring. A famous Candlemas poems goes:

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
    Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
    Winter will not come again.

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is the site of the annual Ground Hog event. Our little rodent friend (yes, Groundhogs are classified as rodents) is called Punxsutawney Phil. He has been making this annual winter prediction since 1887. There are a few other "predictors" around the country, but they all pale in comparison to Phil's ability to predict the remainder of winter.

  • Karrin Allyson  -  2016 Jazz Residency Concert

    11/09/2016

The Jazz Residency Initiative presents the 3rd Annual Fryeburg Academy Jazz Residency Capstone Concert, featuring five-time Grammy nominated vocalist-pianist Karrin Allyson with the award-winning Fryeburg Academy Big Band, Chorus, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. It's no surprise that music lovers and critics around the world have been singing Allyson’s name from the roof tops, marveling at the extraordinary range of her repertoire. While moving from the songs of Gershwin and Porter to Duke, Thelonius, and Miles, and then to Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell, Allyson unites this wide world of music with her wamth and depth. She’s not just singing a lyric, she’s telling you her story, and then that becomes your story. You hear the music from the inside out.

The 2016 Jazz Residency is sponsored in part by Chalmers Insurance Group, Green Thumb Farms, Ham Charitable Foundation, Hastings Malia P.A., Kezar Realty, Maine Arts Commission, Norway Savings Bank, and The Old Saco Inn.
